Last night’s episode went pretty smooth. I don’t know why, but I always get nervous before doing the show– I psyche myself out for some reason, even after having done the show for more than a year. It could be that since the stuff I play is such a current, growing music niche, that I have a responsibility to be on par with the UK pirates. I know my mixing skills are pretty meh, but I try to play it off & cool. I think I do okay in terms of that. The music I play is associated with a culture that prides itself on skilled beatmatching and pirate radio-like hype– I try to do as much of that as possible.
I’d say I’ve modeled my radio show around a couple of things, and have drawn from the most unlikely of places. One show that comes to mind: Dusk & Blackdown’s Rinse show, which I don’t think I’ll ever be able to (yet) resemble since their whole model is based on playing exclusive dubplates. But the type of stuff they play is very in-tune with the kinda bass music I’m attracted to: dark, rhythmic, danceable, yet still experimental. I feel like it’s essentially what Kode9 would be listening to. Bok Bok and Elijah & Skilliam’s Rinse shows are programs I get a lot from, too, especially when it comes to the way I talk over the music. Benji B is another one. I also listen to 99 Jamz–local rap and r&b station– a lot, especially lately. To listen to my show, you’d really have to listen to these stations and programs first to sorta get a better understanding of what this show has grown into.
Point is, I’m doing the best I can, and given the type of anxieties I deal with, especially performing or playing in front of a group of people, sometimes I’m gonna freak out. Mind you, I’ve been on the radio for the past three and a half years.
Either way, last night’s show was solid and I played a lot of stuff from the Butterz June zip. Probably the best and largest zip they’ve put out so far. I also went this show without playing any Canblaster. Haha. Three Youngstar tracks and a really brilliant Hindzy D track. Good stuff.
I’ll be on next week, and I’ll have some info on upcoming events I’m spinning, as well as my own little night: STEAM.
